Chapter Seven

FOR SEVERAL SECONDS the only sound that could be heard was the gargled moaning of the one-eyed man curled on the table top. Hawk still had the Colt in his hand when he turned, turned slowly, uncertainly, not sure of what his movement might trigger off.

The breed was standing well clear of the wall, some way in front of the barrels and sacks; his hands were both hooked inside the dark leather of his gun belt, the thumbs behind it, fingers curved so that the knuckles rested against the smooth belt. By his left hip there was holstered a Remington .44 pistol, the top of the holster cut away at the rear so as to give the man an unimpeded draw. At the other side the bone handle of a knife pushed up from a hide sheath. The breed had made no attempt to go for either weapon.

He simply stared along the long, low room and said, ‘He sent me.’

Hawk held the Colt steady on the man. Inside the space of a second he could squeeze the trigger and the breed could be a dead man. Both of them knew that. Laura and Melville knew it as well.

‘I was followin’ you earlier. Picked up your trail more’n a day back. Got close once or twice, but never enough to give me a fair chance.’

‘That you watching us from on the ridge?’ asked Hawk.

‘Right. Figured you’d spotted me so I backed off. When I see you was passin’ by this place, I got that mule of mine runnin’ its ass off an’ got here before you. Thought this might be a better place’n out in the open.’ He stopped for a few moments and pushed with the end of his tongue at something that was stuck between his teeth. ‘Only thing, they was here.’

He nodded past Hawk and Laura at the bodies of the two men at the end of the room.

Hawk looked at him evenly. ‘You could’ve pitched in then. Why didn’t you?’

The breed thought about it for a while. ‘Ain’t sure. ’Cept it didn’t seem right. ’Sides, if one of them did for you that saved me the trouble.’

Hawk nodded. The Colt was still pointing at the breed’s chest. ‘An’ now it ain’t come out that way?’

The breed let his left hand slide away from his gun belt and Hawk watched keenly, covering the move. But all that happened was that the man scratched at his ear and twisted his head a little to the side.

The one-eyed man had stopped moaning and was either unconscious or dead. The stench of excrement was slowly filling the atmosphere. With a sudden jerk and sigh the youngster began to come out of his faint. Hawk stepped back and to the counter so that he could cover him should it be necessary.

‘This Hunter,’ said the breed, having given the matter a few moments’ thought, ‘he never gave no idea of what I’d be goin’ up against. Not a gunfighter like you. Nothin’ like that.
